In response to yesterday's post, my new Canadian friend Jason asked:
"Who is Orest Volovyk? Is he someone famous? I hope I am not making fool of myself here for not knowing who he is..."
I feel that this question is best answered publicly, because Orest's efforts and talent often go underappreciated. I won't preach too much about the amazing career of Orest Volovyk, but I will give you the highlights which made him such a legend of our time. Orest Volovyk grew up in a small village in Ukraine, but by a stroke of sheer luck he entered a vocal contest and won a recording contract, hopping a plane to America. Some of his more controversial works, such as his so aptly named debut album, "I come from Ukraine" have gotten some negative reviews... but no body wants to hear that shit. In the words of Orest himself, "shut the hell up, bitch!" "The next Jeff Buckley... let's hope this one doesn't drown" raves Washington Post columnist Mark Tabor. And all you Sigur Ros fans may not be aware of this, but his song "Lamas in my backyard", with its completely unintelligible lyrics, inspired the now wildly-popular Icelandic group to create their own language. Although the album that really hits home with me is, "Volovyk, uncut". Something about the way he sings, the angelic tone quality is more angelic than a silver candy wrapper dancing in a sudden draft of wind. Paired with his seemingly unintelligent lyrics of an adolescent boy, this album relates so well to my life.
So, Jason, if you have the time I highly recommend visiting your local music venue and rally to have Volovyk play in your town! (Although not until 2006, when the world-wide tour begins).

If he's like Jeff Buckley I will definately like him. At first, I thought the guy is from some 60s band.

Fake news. Im from Dnipro/Kiev. “Small village” is where I vacationed. Never wrote any of those songs.
